Columbus Zoo & Franklin Park Conservatory

The Columbus Zoo is defninitely a place we will miss when we leave! The bears are some of our favorites to see....
Momma Max & E....and a polar bear :) The weather was perfect! We spent a few hours looking at animals and packed lunch in then made it home in time for naps.
One other place we visited was The Franklin Park Conservatory. It's a "botanical landmark" with several different plants and flowers in each climate zone represented. I've always wanted to go....not really Brett's thing! So, grandma was the perfect person to take along. I'm glad we went....there were sooo many beautiful flowers! E wanted to stop and smell just about every last one!

*So, I just realized I uploaded these pics small, and I'm too lazy to go back and fix them, so just click on the pic if you want to see them bigger*
Those are balls of glass floating around in the pond. It was filled with HUGE goldfish, that honestly are just gross to me for some reason!
There's a bunch of different exhibits throughout the year... Now is the "Blooms and Butterflies" exhibit. The funky orange/red/yellow design behind us is actually blown glass.
This is the rainforest climate...and each day they do a butterfly release. We learned the butterflies flock to this glass because they are visually attracted to UV light/colors (which is why they love flowers).

This one was so pretty...sitting in the window
Unbeknownst to us it was Earth Day weekend (guess we're not very green)! There were a million people at the Conservatory. We had already walked through the bright glass area, not knowing that's right where they do the butterfly release. It was impossible to get back there with a huge stroller on the tiny walkways. Luckily for us this little buddy decided to land on grandma's shirt to give us a close up view!
It stayed there for a good 5 minutes while we (and several other people) ooohed and aaaahed over it! Totally made our day!

A few of the fun exotic flowers we saw....don't ask me what they are....I didn't take notes :)

Amish Country

Our adventure to Amish Country deserves a post all on it's own....mostly because I took so many pictures! We planned to go on a weekend while Brett was home, but the weather didn't cooperate. I decided to be brave, and with the GPS take my mom and the kids on our own, on one of the few nice days we had.

Our first stop was Heini's Cheese Chalet!
This cute old man Atlee was our "tour guide." He explained the whole cheese-making process to us. Very interesting! If you can see through the glass (and the awesome flash reflection) you can see the HUUUUGE vat, filled with the beginnings of some jalepeno cheese.
Our favorite part is the aisles of free cheese and fudge samples! Momma Max couldn't resist the cheese curds :) Emri is showing her fudge sample! We spent a while in this place and when we got out to the car.....
...the battery was DEAD! AWESOME time to NOT have brought the husband along! haha! Well, I'm not sure if our car has a glitch....or if it's my brain, but this is like the 4th time in a year I've killed our battery. Really. We had sat in the car for a while when we first got there so I could feed Jet and change his diaper. Apparently, (according to Brett) if you have the car on, open and shut the driver door, then climb in another door, turn the key off and never open the driver's door again after turning the car off, the lights stay on and drain the battery. CONFUSED? Me too! Why does it matter what door you get out last?! ANYWHO..... LUCKY FOR US....there was a construction site pretty much in the same parking lot. Pretty sure these Amish guys whistled at my mom when we got out of the car hours earlier :) After I tried starting the car like 25 times, we figured I better ask for some help. No sooner than opening the back of the car for some jumper cables, the man in the hard hat was walking toward me telling me they could help us out. Apparently they'd been watching! haha! He told me not to even get my cables out....and with a nod of his head, his buddy in a red truck was driving over to us! A few minutes later we had power....and I was soooo grateful!!! One of them made the comment, "Now that was even faster than calling AAA!" They pulled away, back to work.....just yards down the parking lot, and my mom and I were like, "That was so nice, we should give them some $." Momma handed me some cash and I handed it right back!! "Mom, I went and got the guys....you can go pay them!" hahah! She walked it over (as you saw in my previous post) and of course they wouldn't take it from her. They said it was their good deed for the day! THANK YOU NICE MEN!
The only down side of this hiccup was we needed to keep the car running for a while to get the battery charged....I was going to take my mom to this yummy Amish restaraunt, but we settled for a burger instead at a little cafe. It was nice outside so we sat at some picnic tables out front and kept the car running. While we were there we took a horse & buggy ride!
E very excited to see the horse pulling up to get us!

I don't know what it is about the lifestyle that is so intriguing to me?? Maybe I'm just impressed that they get along so well with their simple way of life. I mean....who just gets around by horse and buggy these days?! The area they live in is soooo hilly. I was a little nervous driving up some of the big hills....you get to the top, can't see a thing, then it's straight down from there. Very rollercoaster-esque!
I loved this little school house. Mostly I loved that they were playing volleyball on the concrete pad. There was another group of kids playing baseball in the field behind the school.
Some Amish traffic :)
I totally had to zoom in for this one and it's still not super close, but these little girls were out playing with the baby lambs....the girl on the left is holding one in her lap.
All the houses are white...and all their laundry is strung across their yards.
If I was this guy I'd probably be mad I was Amish! He was HAND-sawing that tree. He'd probably been there all day!
Mary Ann....this cemetery pic was for you. It's pretty shoddy, but I was driving and there was no where to pull off! If you blow the pic up and look really closely in the middle the bushes spell out "Wooster Cemetery." I thought it was cool :)
I was pretty bummed, after the whole car incident and taking our time with eating, we pulled up to this big Christmas Shoppe that I really wanted to go in, and we see the sign says CLOSED. Apparently the Amish people close everything at 5! We seriously got there at 5:00 on the dot! Grrr. A few other shops we were interested in looking in were also closed. I don't know if we'll make it back there before we move. Oh well! At least Momma Max got to see some real Amish folk, and ride in a buggy :) E zonked as soon as we headed home and slept most of the 2 hour drive!
Jet really was there too! He was just a little angel baby in his seat the whole time.....awake to eat and then back in for the ride. I love it when they're that portable!

Momma Max Highlights

Momma Max came for an "extended stay" getaway :) We were sooooo grateful and lucky to have her for 2 1/2 weeks! Brett was gone 8 of those days on a rotation in Canton, Ohio. I tell ya...after having a "full time wife" in my house I think those sister-wives are on to something! haha! Until I get all my pics sorted....here are the highlights of her stay.

#16: Brett & I went on our first solo date since Jet was born!
#15: We (she) did some damage at The Buckle, and MJR...and a few other stores along the way!
#14: She was a cleaning/tidying maniac. We had a few house showings while she was here...it amazes me how fast we can destroy a clean house.
#13: The day before she was SUPPOSED to go home, I talked her into staying 4 more days :)

#12 Playing at the park in our neighborhood
#11 Columbus Zoo
#10 Enjoying the play areas at Polaris & Tuttle Malls....we had LOTS of rain during her stay.
#9 Eating icecream at Ritas...
...and sneaking out after the kids were down for some icecream at Jeni's.
#8 Glitter Toes!
#7 Butterflies & Blooms exhibit at Franklin Park Conservatory
#6 Eating out....and take out! We introduced Momma Max to Raising Canes chicken.
#5 Coloring Easter Eggs
#4 Our tour of the Anthony Thomas Chocolate Factory, and seeing the 235 lb. "Buckeye." Hmmm....is that really worth $3,500?!
#3 "dackin bocks" (stacking blocks)
#2: Emri helping bake her famous banana bread!
#1 Probably the my favorite highlight of her trip was when I talked Momma Max into (trying to) pay some Amish construction guys for jump-starting our car! CLASSIC!!!! I'm pretty sure she's the cutest thing they've ever seen!! Yes...they jumped our car with the horse and buggy :)

Jet @ 2 Months

CHECK-UP STATS
Weight: 13lbs. 6oz. (84%)
Height: 23 1/4 inches (61%)
Head: 16 inches (73%)

Jet is growing like a weed!! He's a pretty happy boy for the most part. Some of his milestones and happenings thus far:
  • 6 weeks: slept 6 hours at night, started smiling.
  • 7 weeks: slept 8 hours at night (not always though)
  • 8 weeks: goes to bed around 8:30 or 9, then sleeps about 8 1/2 hours after his last feeding at 10 pm.
  • had his first set of shots at dr....was NOT happy about that! He screamed, then did the "no breathe" for about 10 seconds, turned bright red, then dark purple, then finally let it all out! Poor guy!
  • Dr gave RX reflux med at his appt...he's been a litte fussy when he eats so hopefully this will help.
  • Now wearing size 2 diapers.
  • Not a great napper in the pack n play....like to be held or out and about in the car to sleep
  • likes to smile and coo first thing in the morning and after his belly is full.
  • his big sis LOVES him a lot...several times a day Emri takes his hand and in a high-pitched baby talk voice she says "oh! baby brother feenos (fingers) sooo tiny!! oh he's soo cute!!"
  • loves his baths, is now ok with being lotioned, but still gets mad when we put his shirts over his head. silly boy!
Okay fellow RDH..do you remember the term "ankyloglossia?" Jet was born tongue-tied. Luckily for us it didn't affect his ability to eat, but I had concerns about speech, and him not being able to stick his tongue out down the road (seriously!), ok and his "mojo" but that's another story for another day! haha! At 6 weeks we had his tongue clipped. It was no big deal...no anesthesia or anything. Just some sterile scissors and a little snip. He was more mad that the nurse was holding his head still than anything :) Now he'll be able to stick his tongue out and enjoy licking ice cream (one day) like the rest of us!
It isn't very often that Brett gets this kind of time with Jet....Emri is VERY demanding of her dad's attention the second he walks through the door! I couldn't help but snap this pic! We love this little dude!
