HaPpY BiRtHdAy AMeRiCa....and KaRa too!

A couple days before the 4th a friend of Brett's from school threw a great BBQ/Party at his parent's BEAUTIFUL home in Zanesville. When we pulled up I asked Brett if they live on a golf course! The yards in their "neighborhood" were gorgeous...and huge! I've never been out past the East side of Columbus, so it was a first for us!! It took a little over an hour to get there, but it was well worth the drive! Thanks to the Clarks for your hospitality towards all of us poor dental students! Everything was amazing....food, games, fireworks....! We loved it!
Some of the girls:
Melanie (Matt's darling mom), Sierra (I think, sorry it was our first time meeting), Kate & Averi, Molly & Lexi, Me and Emri, Kara & Abigail, Amanda. Averi, Emri, and Abigail were all born within a couple of weeks of eachother!
Molly, Lexi and James giving a sparkler a try!
Typical scenario of boys and fireworks! What is the fascination with lighting an explosive in your hand....and then when it goes off screaming.....the boy jumps, yells, and shakes his hand as if he's surprised IT HURT?!?!?!? Weird! And these boys are smart enough to be in graduate school?! If that were me....I'd be all for protecting those money-makers!
The firework show! Hopefully the neighbors didn't mind the hour of ruckus....at 10pm....2 days before the actual holiday!
Emri did great with all the noise....and we kept her up late! She even was quick enough to track most of the fireworks that flew up into the sky before exploding! Here she is with daddy watching the fireworks!

This was our 1st 4th of July spent in Ohio, since last year we were at Niagra Falls. We decided to hit up the Hilliard Parade and festivities with some friends. The weather was bearable....it could have been a lot hotter! I Love. Love. parades....it's just not the 4th of July without one. Growing up, the big parade in South Jordan went right past our house, so we always had the best seats....and never had to go early to save them!
SO....apparently a "FLOAT," around here, means hitching a trailer to your truck and filling it with little league baseball teams that are asking the crowd to throw candy TO THEM! What ever happened to all the decorations, and the little hidden guy driving the actual float with teenage beauty queens standing at their post and doing the parade wave??? Nope, didn't see one of those floats! (plus in Utah, each ward...and stake has it's own float too)! So, Ohio parades are a little different, but still enjoyable!
Me, Amanda & Heather
Dallin, Brett and Emri (she struggled through the parade, since it was right during nap time....and she refused! I don't blame her, there was a lot of commotion)
I asked Brett to take a picture of her semi-patriotic outfit....and apparently this is the best he could do!

We had a BBQ in the afternoon that got rained out, so we had to stay inside. The food was still great and the company was too! We went to a neighborhood park to watch the fireworks from a distance so we didn't have to fight traffic and crowds! It was perfect!
Amanda, Boston, Heather & Brandon
The Williams Clan
Our little family enjoying the fireworks! Emri sat so still and LOVED the bright lights!! She was asleep though the second we started our drive home! It was a long day for the little squirt!!

HaPpY BiRtHdAy to KARA too....we missed you and wish you could have been here to celebrate (and we hope you got your birthday icecream this year)!

to locals, it's called "Lovul" (Louisville)

IT'S OFFICIAL.....2nd YEAR IS OVER!!!!!!!! We have a husband/daddy again!! Brett took his board exam on Monday and we couldn't be happier to have his full attention and time devoted to us and NOT studying! Shortly after Emri was born Brett had finals for winter quarter, then he was so busy with spring quarter and studying for boards we have really missed him...although, I must say I am really proud of him for being so great to manage his time well. Even though he's had a lot on his plate he hasn't neglected his fatherly/husband duties! We love you and are so grateful for your dedication to our family, church and school responsibilities!
We keep hearing about how great 3rd year is...the best of all 4 years of dental school, so we decided to start it off with a bang! We spent a couple of days in Lousiville, Kentucky for our first "official" (much needed) family trip together! This is one of the many bridges over the Ohio River as you arrive in the city of Louisville.
We first stopped at a place called GlassWorks which is a glassblowing studio. I never knew the process of making glass and it was actually quite interesting to see these artisans creating vases and such....Below one artist is blowing into the end of the pipe while the other works with the hot honey-like glass that just came out of 2200F hot furnace! Very cool!
We stayed at a hotel in kind of a sketchy part of town....Brett said on our next trip he is in charge of booking our hotel. I guess I didn't really research location as much as a decent price! I was really nervous driving there for the first time. It's the kind of neighborhood that you can't stop staring at the people walking down the street, but at the same time you don't want to stare too long for fear that you might be gunned down or something for looking at someone the wrong way! Ok, maybe it wasn't THAT bad, but I was still nervous! Emri liked being in the pool...although it wasn't heated! It was like a giant (cold) bathtub to her!
Some family friends of ours used to live in Louisville and recommended eating at "Lynn's Paradise Cafe." I was laughing when we pulled up and was like, "are you kidding?!" The look of this place was very unique with the strangest decor in and outside the building, but the food was fabulous! We shared 5-potato pancakes with a goatcheese dipping sauce for an appetizer. Brett had Sausage Penne Jumbalaya and I ordered the Portabello Mushroom and Spinach Sandwich with pan fried apples on the side!
This place is known for a few crazy happenings during the year...one of which is an "ugly lamp shade" contest! Each table in the joint was lit by one of these ugly lamps! There were random trees throughout the room with even more random decorations hanging from them! I was definitely preoccupied the whole time we were there as I looked around at all the funky stuff! I would totally recommend this place to anyone going to Louisville!
We went to Churchill Downs, and the Kentucky Derby Museum. We took a tour of the place and it was so cool! The Derby is called the "Greatest 2 Minutes in Sports." It takes place the first weekend in May every year.
We entered into the museum through a starting gate (just as the horses begin the race)! There were exhibits, art work, stories and artifacts of previous races.
Brett and I mounted this horse and tried to get into jockey position. Most jockeys are only 4'11" to just over 5 feet tall and only can weigh between 115-120 lbs. They are tiny little fellas! I am too big to be a jockey! Good thing it wasn't a life-long dream of mine!
Brett went through the tutorial on how to wager on a horse race! I can't believe the amounts of money that go through this place on wagers!
This is the resident thoroughbred that is a retired racer and the miniature is kept here for companionship to the big boy!
The grandstands....it costs anywhere from $100-1,000 to sit in the stands....it costs more the higher up and closer to the finish line you are. The general admission for a "grass spot" in the middle of the track costs $40, but it's first come first serve and some people sleep out to reserve their spot in line. Our tour guide said you would have a great time in the middle of the track, but you probably wouldn't see a horse at all! I guess some people just go for the party?!
These are some of the stalls where the horses get prepped before the derby....not really barn stalls like I was expecting, although they do have those too.
E and I standing next to a model of "Mine That Bird," and his jockey, they were the winners of the 2009 Kentucky Derby.
We also visited the Louisville Slugger Museum & Bat Factory. I think this was our favorite stop! Here's Brett and E standing in front of the world's biggest bat!

The museum was full of historical baseball memorabilia, including some old bats used by big hitters in the major league from back in the day....one of which was Mickey Mantle's bat....Brett, Emri and I all took advantage of being able to "touch" the bat!
We weren't allowed to take pictures on the actual tour of the bat factory which was the best part of the day by far! When woodworkers used to make bats in the beginning of baseball times, it took them 30+ minutes by hand to down the wood to the shape of a bat. Now, by machine it takes less than a minute to make a major league baseball bat! It was amazing to see how fast a millet of wood turned into a bat! The major leaguers each have a wood (either maple or ash), length, weight, and finish color preference so each bat is specifically made per players requests. The bats being made while we walked through were specifically designed for Kevin Youkilis of the Boston Red Sox. It was really cool to see it all happening!
We had a fun, much needed break from the real world! Although Brett starts back to school on Monday I'm hoping we can do lots of fun things and take full advantage of our summer this year!

I hate goodbyes! The hardest part about being at this stage of our lives is that many others started this stage before us....and that means they move on before we are done :( Lots of great people from our ward here are moving or have already left. We went to dinner with the Royces this week for our last hoorah before they take off. They were planning to be gone a month ago, but their 2 year old son was diagnosed with cancer just before their move was scheduled. He's been having chemo and radiation treatments and he's doing well. He's such a cute little guy! The doctors have given them the ok to move and continue his treatment in their new area, so they are headed out. We love you guys and will miss you a ton!!
Me and Emri, Heather, Mindy and Jersey
Brandon and Isaac, Brett, Dallin flyin solo (Amanda is in Utah), Kayce and Trav
Emri and Jersey girl! They were born about 4 1/2 months apart. Jersey is the youngest of 5 kids....all 4 older brothers! She's gonna be one protected little girl! Isn't she adorable?! Good luck with your move Mindy and Travis!

4 month stats

Emri turned 4 months on Saturday!
Sunday we celebrated with Brett on his 1st Father's Day! We treated him with breakfast in bed,
and, some fun presents...including this awesome pink tie that Emri picked out for him (we're starting a tradition of getting him a new tie each year for Father's Day)!
And, a manly man's dinner....baby back ribs on the BBQ and Memphis sweet potatoe fries. It was my first time grilling ribs, so I was pretty nervous! Brett liked them....I myself am not a huge fan of picking meat off of bones and fat. Brett loves finger foods though, especially things like this that makes him a little homesick for Tonga.

Emri weighed in at 15 lbs 5oz (83% percentile) & measured 24.5 inches (54% percentile). I think this is her "suck in and think thin" face while she's on the scale! She cracks me up!!
Daddy and Emri PRE-shots....and this is her "you're gonna stick that where??" face!
I let Brett be the one to hold her this time. It's so hard either way seeing them get poked.
Some tummy time after her appointment. She was being pretty lazy and just laid with her head relaxed....
Her reflux seems to have peaked again, so the doctor prescribed her a new medicine and said to try some rice cereal as well. What???? Solids? Ah, she's growing too fast!
This was the first attempt! Not really a fan!! But such a cute little frowney face!
Some of Emri's quirks/traits up till now:
  • Loves to play on her gym/mat and reach for the toys
  • grasps toys and anything in her hands goes straight to her mouth
  • loves to hear herself talk and squeal
  • she rolls to her side when she's laying on her back, but hasn't made it all the way over yet
  • she found her tongue and loves to stick it out....and it's so long!
  • I always lay her at one end of the crib to sleep....when she gets up I find that she's always on the opposite end of the crib with her head in the corner!
  • started rice cereal
  • she sucks her bottom lip in all the time (I think it stemmed from refusing her medicine...she hates it and it's usually a battle to get it to her tummy)
  • likes to splash in the bath
  • getting more used to sitting in her Bumbo chair....she didn't love it at first
  • HAS TO sleep with her snuggly bear that Brett bought her the day before she was born. She loves to rub her nose in it and it usually covers her face while she sleeps (like in the picture below)!
I can't believe it was a year ago today that we found out I was pregnant...and now she's already spent four months with us! I feel so blessed to be Emri's mom and to be able to spend my days at home with her. She is such a sweetheart! I never knew I could feel such a deep love for someone so fast!
Being a mom is such hard work....but ONE smile from this precious little face is such a payoff for all the hard moments! Love you E!!

THE SHORTENED LONG VERSION....AND IT'S STILL SUPER LONG!

*****WARNING....THIS MAY BE A RECORD POST FOR LONGEST EVER....EVER....SERIOUSLY, EVER!*****

Emri and I spent 2 1/2 weeks in Utah while Brett stayed home to study for finals and the national board exam. We traveled out with Amanda and her boys....it was so nice to have someone else on the flight and in the airports with. I was quite nervous to take Emri on the plane for the first time by myself. She did AWESOME on our way out. Coming home wasn't quite as awesome, but we made it and were SO SO HAPPY to see Brett/DADDY! He missed her so much and we missed him too (notice how I said he missed her...not me!) We had an open seat next to us on the way out which was so great....Emri enjoyed talking to everyone around and the flight attendant loved her!
Amanda and her boys!

-------------MORGAN/OGDEN------------
Emri got some of that quality cuddle time on that she loves so much with grandma Sharon!
She got lots of attention from her aunts, uncles and cousins!
Listening to some words of wisdom from Great Grandma Anderton!
One thing I miss the most about being so far from family is all of our nieces and nephews! They grow so fast! I love them all so much! This is Kenya and Mac! So dang cute!
Tabitha the chunk! Those eyes and cheeks are to die for!
All my "sisters" and my other mom! I totally was blessed with the best women in my life....I think I lucked out with all these amazing sister-in-laws as a reward for surviving growing up with 4 rowdy brothers!
We had a day of making bows for our little girls! You can save so much money doing it this way! The ever amazing Jaimilyn showed us some of her secrets!

Apparently Emri DOES NOT like to share her grandma!
I got to see Ruby, Everett, and Morgan in their dance/tumbling recital!
Here's Emri with Sawyer, her closest cousin on the Anderton side! He's 2 months older than her.
Emri with Great Grandma & Grandpa Anderton
So cute...Mindy and Ruby both zonked out! I walked in the room to this...I'm not sure if Mindy fell alseep first while reading, or if Ruby did while listening?? Either way, the other one followed suit!

---THREE MUSKETEERS: NOW SIX STOOGES!!---
I made such great friends during dental hygiene school....it's amazing how much alike Melissa, Crystal and I are. We have stayed so close and apparently we all thought it would be a great idea to start our families all at the same time too! This was the first time we'd all been together since the babes were born!
Hazel Jane, born March 27th
Emri, born February 20th
Parker Brown, born April 18th
Our first playdate....and photoshoot! Here we all are....in our assigned spots on the couch! We didn't quite fit as snuggly as we used to! ha ha! We were having way too much fun!
It only took like 25 tries to get all six of us (kind of) in the picture! We were laughing so hard! The babies...not so much!
I think they will be the best of friends....once we get back into town!
The pic below is so sweet! Parker is quite the stud muffin...already holding hands?! His dad even told him "no funny business" before we came that day! What a smooth kid!
--------------SALT LAKE-----------
Here's proud uncle Kolby meeting her for the first time! He and Momma Max picked us up at the airport! She was quite tired from the day of travel!
Emri got to spend some time in the mountains for the first time!! This is taken on top of Butterfield Canyon looking into the Salt Lake Valley. We drove over the mountain on our way home from visiting Kade's new house in Tooele instead of taking the freeway home...this was much prettier!
Emri with great Aunt Bonnie
While we were home she learned this little trick...I'm guessing one of her uncles taught her?!?! Can you believe how long that tongue is?!
4 Brklacich Generations
Meeting uncle Kade for the first time!
E and Great Grandma Brklacich...she's the first great grandchild, so this was a special visit!
E and Great Grandpa Brklacich
The main reason for our trip out west was to support Kolby.....he made it to graduation and we are SO SO PROUD!!! Here's Emri with a bunch of Kolby's football buddies. Very sweet!!
Kolby we love you! It really seems like just yesterday you were Emri's size and attached to my hip! Yes, you're still my baby!
The fam, minus Kade who was sick and Brett who we left in Ohio to study his guts out!
The kiddos....crazy we all came from the same parents! We have quite a variety of style in our family...never a dull moment, that's for sure!
One of my bestest friends Katie made a special trip from Cali to say hi (and also to visit her brand new niece)! We were so glad to see you for a short hour!! Emri's face is hilarious!
-------ISLAND PARK-------
My cousin and I planned a little family reunion in Island Park. Several of our family members were brave and camped in the rain. We really roughed it....in a beautiful cabin (my kind of camping)! This is my cousin Jill....she was due with her little guy, Pratt, one day before I was due with Emri. Her doctor induced her a week early. Jokingly, before Jill had him, I had her tell her baby Pratt to tell Emri to get here QUICK! Emri was very obedient and came the very next day (about 27 hours later)....also a week early!! I guess Emri really missed her buddy!
Emri and Pratt reunited for the first time since before birth (4 months ago)!! It was so fun to see them next to eachother! They have such different body shapes, but are very similar in height and weight!
Some pics at Buttermilk campground in Island Park. Kelti, I know you will appreciate me posting this picture of you! My uncles cooked an amazing dutch oven meal....ribs, chicken, potatoes and cobbler! YUMMMMMY!
Uncle Kent and my cousin Kort
Bridger...camping in true Bridger fashion. Some of the yayhoos were brave enough to get in the lake and do some skiiing....not I!
I'm sure glad we brought some babysitters! All of my cousins kids were loving Bridger, Brody and their friends Casey and Trever. The boys didn't seem to mind having the attention of those darling girls...oh, and you too Blais!
Roasting some mallows around the fire....I was so sick, I really think I ate like 18 marshmallows! Thanks Kelt, you are the pro of toasting the perfect golden-brown gooey goodness!
After a chilly day in the rain we took shifts soaking in the hot tub! I opted out of this rowdy shift....but when Jill, Greg and I went out late that night we got poured on! Kinda fun!
Ty and Jill with Pratt and Emri....I guess this is what it would be like to have twins?!?!
Great Grandpa Reynolds holding the babies....there have been 2 more great-grandkids born even since these 2 little munchkins! There are 18 great-grandchildren and one more on the way! It was interesting to see that Emri and Pratt both liked to be held the same way when they're tired. Jill and I figured it's because grandma Eleanor must have held them and loved them the same way in heaven before they came to us!
Dad grillin' up some mean burgers! No, it's not snowing....just lots of smoke from the BBQ!
4 Generations of Reynolds'
On the way home from Island Park we visited grandma's grave in Ashton, ID to show Emri as Eleanor is her middle name. We sure miss you grams!
Me & Emri with Angi and her twins Claire and Jane! Angi delivered baby #4 two days after this picture was taken...doesn't she look amazing?! She's superwoman! We were so lucky to stop at the hospital on our way to the airport to meet little Ty! In all, I met 5 new babies while we were home! CRAZY!! We must have all been pretty bored 9 months ago! :)
We had such a fun time visiting everyone....even with all these pics there were still so many times I didn't even pull out my camera (I guess I was busy with the baby?!)! Emri met so many new faces and saw a bunch of new places. I felt like we were going non-stop! It totally RAINED every day we were there, but we didn't let it stop us from having fun! We are definitely trying to catch up on our sleep now that we're home! Hopefully we can do it again soon!
I bet you can't guess who shed the most tears at the airport??? Yes, he loves his baby E!
